Pathfinder: Summon Monster VI Unchained

Thank you for joining us as we expand the summon monster tables. If this is your first time, check out the expanded lists for summon monster I, summon monster II, summon monster III, and summon monster IV, and summon monster V.

The megafauna, or regular animals that are incredibly huge and powerful, entered the expanded summon monster list during the last expansion.  Their addition is simple: animals make up a much smaller part of the list than they did at lower level. The list already includes “dire” and “giant” animals. Megafauna is just the next logical step for these. Now someone that wants to summon only animals has more options and can build a theme around the creatures they want to summon.

Ultimately, that is why we are doing this: so someone can build the character they want instead of the only what is available. That is why there are so many classes and archetypes. This way, you can play how you want instead of only with what the core book as to offer.

Pathfinder: Summon Monster IV Unchained

These past two weeks, we shared with you our take on expanding the summon monster lists. Find the expanded lists for summon monster I, summon monster II, and summon monster III by clicking on these spells. Today we are sharing with you the list for summon monster IV. Make sure to share these with your friends. These are a great help to many spellcasters.

Summon monster IV is where we move into the more fun monsters. Between lions, dire apes and wolves, and giant ants, we are well beyond the animals most people encounter and are into the dangerous animals. Add on a celestial or fiendish template and these creatures are downright scary. Of all the lists that need expanding, this one needs it the least, at least in my own opinion. The reason being is that the players can get summon monster IV by 7th level and not many games survive many levels beyond this. This makes it all the more important that these monster be darn cool, which the base list achieves. Having said that, it can be cooler. With giant chameleons, vultures, and seahorses, dire weasels, and a great white shark you have your choice of awesome templated animals to tackle your enemies with.

Pathfinder: Summon Monster II Unchained

We mentioned before that every Friday we will be posting an expanded list of creatures to summon with the summon monster spells, using Paizo’s bestiaries. There simply is no reason why you can summon a giant frog or a horse but cannot summon a giant tick or a camel. So we are helping you to expand your summon monster table. Earlier this week we shared with you the list for expanding summon monster I. Today we bring you the list for summon monster II. All these monsters are balanced against those created for the original summon monster list.

Edit: Originally, I had the summon monster III here. I have since updated it to the corect list. Thank you John for pointing that out.

Pathfinder: New Unchained Monster for You

With the start of the new year, I am going to try to do a release a new monster or NPC or some other game mechanic or just talk about something for Pathfinder or Traveller on a weekly basis. Who knows, maybe I’ll combine them all at some point. I’d like to kick it off with a new monster for Pathfinder made using the Pathfinder Unchained rules.

HAPHNAX

This green and purple monster is covered with a heavy protective shell and has a long tail ending in a sharp pincer.
HAPHNAX CR/HD 8
Init +0; Perception +13 (blindsight 120 ft.)
Size Medium; Speed 40 ft.; climb 40 ft.

DEFENSES

AC 23, (touch 13, flat-footed 17); Fort +11, Ref +11, Will +7; CMD 26

CMB +17

STATISTICS

Str +6, Con +4, Wis +2; Climb +16, Perception +13, Stealth +13
XP 4,800; NE magical beast

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Paralysis Poison (Ex) A successful attack with a haphnax’s tail pincer injects the creature with a paralysis poison. The creature must succeed a DC 16 Fortitude save or be paralyzed for 1d4 rounds. This is a poison effect.

The haphnax is a forest dwelling creature that paralyzes its enemies with a poison from its tail pincer before it devours its meal. This deadly monster is difficult to spot since it hides in small trees and paralyzes its dinner whenever it wanders near. It is not uncommon for its victim to die before it can scream in pain.

All week long, we have been showing off what the new monster creation rules from Pathfinder Unchained can do. Today we bringing you what is arguably the silliest of the monsters we created with these rules: the bonenado. All week long, I am showing off monsters that I created using the Pathfinder Unchained monster creation rules and playtested during PaizoCon. Earlier this week, we showed off the armored veth’thar, jurassic tiger, and the degenerate hag. Today we are looking at the spidersaurus. This is the dinosaur-version of a spider. Pathfinder Unchained: Degenerate Hag

Artwork by Dave Allsop

All week long, we are posting monsters created with the new rules presented in Pathfinder Unchained and playtested at PaizoCon. Today we present to you the degenerate hag. This creature is the forerunner of all other hags. It would be Medium size if it could use its legs to stand. While it can technically speak, they know a primate language that has long since been forgotten by time, a language so old that even Aklo is young compared to it.

We hope that you enjoy this monster in your games.

Pathfinder Unchained: Jurassic Tiger

Artwork by Rick Hershey

As we mentioned yesterday, all week long we are posting monsters made from Pathfinder® Roleplaying Game: Pathfinder Unchained™. Yesterday we showed off a real tank of a monster with a high armor class but a very low touch AC and and an easy to fool Will save.

Today, we have the jurassic tiger. This monster is more of a striker. Its bite can rip your body apart while its claws can savage an opponent’s defenses. Incase you are not sure, the DC for the body rip and the defense breaker are listed at the start of attack options. It is the same for both.

Jurassic Tiger CR/HD 8

Pathfinder Unchained: Armored Veth’thar

Artwork by Monsters by Email
Artwork by Monsters by Email
For PaizoCon I said I would run 4 game sessions: 3 of Rescue from Tyrkaven and 1 of Expedition to Playtest Mountain. The latter adventure was never meant to be published. I outright stole the plot to it from Cabin in the Woods and presented a number of monster I have had in my head for a long time and figured this would be the perfect excuse to write them all down. Unfortunately, 2 weeks before PaizoCon and I had only written down one of three possibilities for the adventurers to take.

Then I got Pathfinder® Roleplaying Game: Pathfinder Unchained™. If you are a GM that makes your own monsters, GET THIS BOOK! I cannot stress enough how much this book really saved my game. By the time I finished making up monsters for playtest mountain, I was able to make up monsters in 20 minutes. The best part is that I don’t feel like these monsters are any less worthy at the game table than monsters made the traditional way. They were just as good and no one at the table knew which were made with which method.

So let me share with you some monsters that came out of those mad monster creation days.

Armored Veth’thar CR/HD 6
