Pathfinder: Magic Item of the River Nations

All week long, JBE is bringing you previews of the soon to be released Book of the River Nations: Complete Player’s Reference for Kingdom Building. Check out Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s previews. Today we look at the magic items fit for a ruler.

One of the first magic items we thought of a ring. Fantasy stories are filled with a ruler or something being made to kiss a ring. We we decided to give a mechanical bonus to someone kissing a ring. The Ring of the Respected King grants the wearer a +10 competence bonus to Bluff and Diplomacy for 10 minutes once someone (other than the wearer) kisses the ring. We’re just imagining someone coming to visit the ruler and the first thing they are made to do before addressing the character is to kiss the ring, allowing the player an easier time to lie to the person.

The next magic item is credited to my wonderful girlfriend who came up with this idea. The Game Board of the Strategist appears like a chess board with illusionary pieces that you direct. If two leaders of mass combat forces play a game, the respective armies they lead are granted a +1 enchantment bonus to their OM and DV.

Magic crowns were a popular idea here. We have 3 different crowns detailed within. The Crown of the Golden Empereror can turn the wearer into a gold dragon as well as protect the wearer with a mind blank spell.

That’s all we’ve got for today. Come back tomorrow to see our final preview.

Pathfinder: Book of the River Nations Kingdom Building

With the Book of the River Nations: Complete Player’s Reference for Kingdom Building premiering soon, JBE is spending all week to share what is inside. Monday we shared the full cover art. Tuesday was the Table of Contents. Today, we’re delving into the heart of the book: the additions to the Kingdom Building section.

The Kingdom Building describes in detail how to, well, build a kingdom. The Kingdom’s Turn is the step by step process how to build your kingdom. This quick reference side bar inside is:

Upkeep Phase
Skip this Phase the first turn or whenever your kingdom is 0 hexes.
1. Determine Kingdom Stability – A stability check to reduce Unrest
2. Pay Consumption – Pay for kingdom’s upkeep
3. Fill Vacant Magic Item Slots – Randomly roll new magic items
4. Unrest – Lose a hex if Unrest is 11 or higher

Improvement Phase
1. Select Leadership – Fill or change leaders
2. Claim Hexes – Increase your kingdom size
3. Establish and Improve Cities – Start cities or build new buildings within a city
4. Build Roads – Add roads in your nation
5. Develop Open Space – Build farms or other improvements
6. Edicts – Set or change level of taxes, festivals and promotions

Income Phase
1. Deposits – Add your own wealth to the treasury
2. Withdrawals – Remove money from the treasury
3. Sell Valuable Item – Roll to see if an expensive magic item can be sold off
4. Income – Roll to determine taxes collected

Event Phase
1. Kingdom Event – Roll to determine which random event happens in your kingdom.

Those playing in kingdom building games already will notice one slight change in this process: Develop Open Space instead of Build Farmlands. Now building farms is one option among many options. Built on the system developed online (and used with permission), these options are now part of the core kingdom building rules. Some of the options are an Apiary for producing honey, an Aqueduct to deliver fresh water to cities and farms, a Fort to increase defenses of your outlying area and give you a staging area for mass combat battles, a Mine to help increase production of your kingdom’s mineral wealth, and a Reservoir to make use of large bodies of fresh water in your kingdom.

A completely new section covers Castle Additions. Now rulers can customize their castle to their heart’s content. Want a sprawling castle with lots of wings? Now you can do that. Do you want a Moat for your castle? That option is available. Or would you rather have your castle protected by Wards and contain an Anti-Scrying Room. That option is available to you.

That’s all we have for today. Come back tomorrow when we start describing Magic Items fit for a ruler.

JBE is Going to PaizoCon

Its official as of earlier this afternoon! Jon Brazer Enterprises is going to PaizoCon! We are so excited. Our current plan is for me to run some games/seminars while the worlds greatest girlfriend works the vendor’s table.

So we’d like your input as to what we should do. Here are a few ideas we have:

  • Seminar – Designing your own Conquest Campaign: This seminar helps GMs to set up their own sandbox-style campaign,
  • Seminar – Monster Designer: Never designed a monster before? Join us as we design a monster together.
  • Game – River Kingdoms Diplomacy: Diplomatic actions can be tricky, but in the River Kingdoms they can be deadly. Your kingdom is frequently raided by thieves from across your border, in your neighboring country. How will you stop these invaders?
  • Game – Surviving the Worldwound: You join a regiment in the 5th crusade. Now you are the last survivors of that regiment. Will you make it home with so many miles of corrupted land and viscous forces standing in your way.

Please share your thoughts.

Just in time for your weekend Traveller game, Jon Brazer Enterprises brings you four new d66 lists for your game.

The first one is for players as much as Referees. d66 Gambling Games. Can your character pick the winner in every game from Asteroid Orbiting to a Zero-G Joust.

Next we have d66 Large Bodies of Water. Many worlds have oceans and every last one has a name. Bodies of water are important for life as well as transportation. Give those bodies of water names a name with significance like Zhodani People’s Ocean or a characteristic like the Hundred Island Sea.

As always we bring you more ship names. This month we have d66 Research Ship Names 2. Name that science vessel something a scientist would be proud to make his big discovery in. Perhaps genetic research is done in the Helix or protection of endangered species is done in the Space Shepherd.
