Traveller: d66s of Spaceports and Hivers

“So you’re approaching the planet. You begin your descent-”
“I scan the area around the planet to see what’s orbiting out there,” the player interrupts
Dismissively the game master says, “Nothing.”
“Nothing?” the player askes quizzically. “This is suppose to be one of the busiest junctions in the subsector. There should be ships going in and out all the time. There’s nothing there?”
Game master pulls out d66 Objects Orbiting a Planet and rolls a pair of d6s. “You see a dozen antique communication satellites, various military fighters practicing maneuvers, a personal solar sailing yacht, and a maintenance bot floating aimlessly.”
“I want to retrieve the maintenance bot,” the player declares.
Giving in, the game master says, “Alright, you capture the robot. So you begin your descent into the main spaceport city and you-.”
The player interrupts again. “What’s the name of the spaceport city?”
The game master pulls out d66 Spaceport City Names and rolls the d6s. “High Tower,” he supplies. “And you go to meet your contact in the bar near the spaceport.” The player looks like he is about to ask a question but the game master is ready for him with d66 Spaceport Bar Names and tells the player that the bar’s name is “Nova Drinks.”
The game master continues and informs the players that there is a hiver sitting in the corner. “Hivers,” the player comments. “What use are they?”
With a devilish smile on his face, the game master takes out d66 Uses for a Hiver and begins spouting off, “Doormat, garbage disposal, plug for leaking oil well, target practice, …”

Art Gallery Updated and Relocated

I’ve added a few new images to the Art Gallery on the site. These are from the newly released Mech Squadrons book and the soon to be released Monsters of the River Nations. Additionally, we’ve moved the Art Gallery to be under the Current Releases heading, along with a listing of online retailers carrying Jon Brazer Enterprises print products.

I would like to add a section of brick and mortar game stores that carry Jon Brazer Enterprises products. If your store does (or if you shop at a store that does), send us an email and let us know.

Origins 2010 Plans

The summer convention season is upon us. We don’t have all of our plans finalized yet, but we do have this firm: we are going to Origins 2010. What is Jon Brazer Enterprises doing at Origins? Well, we’re going to be selling Mech Tech ‘n’ bot: Mech Squadrons for Traveller in the dealer’s room, Booth #420 a mere two booths away from Mongoose Publishing’s booth. My booth is the GPA booth and it is shared by other small game designers, so you will have to look for or ask about Mech Squadrons. I myself will be hanging out at the booth much of the time the dealer’s room is open. Even if you have already picked up Mech Squadrons or are a Pathfinder player and are excited about Book of Beasts, stop by and say hi. I would love to go to know the many people I have gotten to know over the internet but have never met face to face.

What about when the dealer’s room is closed? I don’t have any firm plans yet, but I am probably going to be running some pickup games of Mech Military for Traveller and Hunters of the River Nations for Pathfinder. If you play in my Pathfinder game, you will be able to get an exclusive peak at some of the monsters in our upcoming book Book of Beasts: Monsters of the River Nations.

We can’t wait to go. We’re looking forward to our Origins and the fun we’re going to have. See you there.

JBE Launches PDF Guarantee

Following in the footsteps of other great role playing companies like Evil Hat Productions, Jon Brazer Enterprises is launching our own PDF Guarantee. Our PDF guarantee is this:

We are beginning the process to partner with retailers, making the process seamless in the future. Traveller: Warp Speed

Mech Tech ‘n’ bot: Mech Squadrons just hit store shelves and is about a week away from being released in PDF, but already we at Jon Brazer Enterprises are hard at work on planning the next in the line. One idea that keeps being floated around here is the idea of a TL 17-20ish, faster-than-light drive that enables the ship to pass through normal space. This type of drive draws its inspiration from Star Wars and Star Trek. Whether you call it a warp drive or a hyperdrive, mechanically these two systems work similar. Both are vulnerable to flying through meteor showers, can be pulled out of space due to entering a gravity well (enabling gravity well projector ships), and require less than a week when travelling at maximum warp. Additionally it allows for fleets of ships to travel in formation when linked together by a single ship’s warp system. These systems are so small, single-person fighters can have hyperspace capabilities. Download the ship now and check it out.

To this end, we will be releasing a single warp-capable ship on Monday. This is being released for $0.99, half as much as we normally release new short Mech Tech ‘n’ bot PDFs. We’re releasing this at half price because we want feedback. We want you to tell us if you like the idea. Take a look at the ship, compare it to ships published in other books and do you find the advantages of this kind of ship suitable for the type of game you want to run in your campaign. Then email us, leave a comment here or post a message on the official MGT forums. Please tell us whether you like this ship or if you think it is dumb. We want to know what you think.

Traveller: d66 for Crime, Graffiti and Shipping Company Names

Happy May Everyone,

With the summer convention season fast upon us, Jon Brazer Enterprises is pleased to release four new d66 lists. Up first is Shipping Company Names. If your group transports cargo at all, they need competition. Now you can pull a name out of somewhere else for that outfit with this all new d66 list.

Following that we have two lists for games that involve the criminal underground. First up is Organized Crime Boss Names. Every criminal outfit has someone at its center that pulls all the strings. That list gives you names that you can access fast. The other is Fronts for Organized Crime. Because every criminal organization needs some kind of “legitimate” side to them to help launder credits and provide cover for their illegal activities.

Lastly is d66 Graffiti. From common spray paint to high tech solar changing images, graffiti is littered across run down sections of the urban landscape. Detail it to your players and bring depth to a new location for them.

Traveller Ref Advice: Prep in an Hour

If you are like me, prepping a 4 hour role playing game can take an entire Saturday. I use to spend hours and hours working out all the crunch to the plot I have been thinking of all week, figuring out the nuances to an NPCs personality that could counter the player that questioned every possible inconsistency, looking for the way to help bring out the quiet player more, and ways to keep another player from playing WOW between combats. Then for about the span of a month, my life got busy and I didn’t have an entire Saturday to prep anymore. I did have an hour that I could devote to prepping my game. I pulled out all my supplements and went to work. The end result was actually better than my typical sessions. From that time forward, I now only take an hour to prep for a game.

How do you do it? First set a timer. When it goes off, stop. Discipline yourself. You will get faster with time. For the basic plot, I still come up with that throughout the week, but I will not start writing it up until my one hour prep session. To start off the hour, write down a quick outline of that plot. Don’t go into to much detail since the players are going to wreck any plan you have anyways. The less fully develops the plan, the more players tend to stick with it. I don’t know, it appears to be some kind of inverse law, but it generally works for me. Second, the NPCs. The great thing about Traveller, is that the stats are very easy to fudge if you want to skip this step. I tend to work with pre-generated characters or write down 2-3 key stats for the character. Third, ships and vehicles. I use to make up all own ships. Now, I use pre-generated ships. If I really want to go non-pregen, I take stats of a pregen ship and customize them, lightly. Then I find new artwork. Players don’t need to know the stats are from a book. I’ll paperclip a scrap of paper with an NPCs stats on them to use for the crew. This saves considerable page flipping at game. Lastly, and this is I have found to be most crucial, come up with a list of names for NPCs, ships, planets, corporations, cities, bars, night clubs, streets, crime organization, and anything else your players typically ask for. This allows you to come up with a name of … whatever they ask for on the fly and not have it be repeated. The d66 series is great for this, but there is no reason why you cannot come up with your own. This typically eats up the remainder of my time, but if you still have time left over, write up a few short descriptions of locations. This will help them get into the mood of the scene.

Your first time trying this, you probably will not get as much done as you use to. That is ok. Try it out. Fly by your wits and the seat of your pants and you may well soar. Best of luck to you.

Pathfinder: Play a Goblin

Released today from Jon Brazer Enterprises is the first in a new line of short pdf products. Player Races: High Goblins are designed to possess all the flavor of a goblin while still allow the players to not be underpowered when in a group of elves, humans, and other standard races. Best of all, High Goblins is free for everyone. We ask is that you tell us what you think of High Goblins. Would you be interested in similar variants of existing races rebalanced to be on part with core book races? We are considering variants of races such as kobolds, lizardfolk, minotaurs, demons/devils/celestials, vampires and more. But before we begin work on those, we want to know if you like the format of these races, do these races spark your interest, and would you like other races instead?
