Fate: The Fate of JBE

I do admit that for quite some time I did not “get” Fate. I tried to. I’ve read the Dresden Files RPG books as well as the FATE Core RPG book. I played in a few games at conventions. But for whatever reason it just didn’t feel I understood the game. That all changed this past weekend. I played in a Dune-verse Fate Core game (thank you to the excellent GM and the guys in the group for a good time) and for whatever reason, it all just clicked somewhere in the middle of it. Now I feel the Fate rules and mechanics are something I can play with and more important to this post, work with.

So this brings us to you. What would you like to see for Fate? What is your preferred playing genre? Let us know what you are interested in by voting in our poll. And please leave a comment below if you want to see something specific designed for the game.

Pathfinder: Catfolk Web Enhancements

With Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Catfolk coming out soon, we wanted to share with you a few things written for this release that we are not including … yet. Science fiction elements have recently been stated up by Paizo for the campaign setting. Since we cannot refer to the book from which it comes, we thought we would share with you on the web some technology for catfolk. If and when there is a technology book in the Pathfinder RPG line, we will be happy to publish this and other technological elements in a supplement.

New Racial Technological Item

The following weapon is manufactured by catfolk technologists.
Lioness Lance
Type
two-handed melee; Proficiency martial
Damage 1d8 piercing and 1d8 electricity; Critical x3
Capacity 8; Usage 1 charge/round; Special touch
Price 8,000 gp; Weight 11 lbs.

Description

This longspear is fashioned from ultralight metal alloys and features an insulated grip, finger trigger, and conductive tip—similar to a stun baton but with a larger battery capacity. It also houses an intravenous injector unit in the grip which is activated by a secondary trigger. By activating the primary trigger as a swift action, the wielder can cause the tip of the longspear to charge up and crackle with electricity. On a successful melee attack, a lioness lance deals 1d8 points of electricity damage in addition to normal weapon damage, and the target must make a Fortitude save (DC = 15 + the damage dealt by the electrical charge) or be stunned for 1 round. The electricity damage and stun effect can also be delivered as a touch attack. Additionally, the lance can be loaded with a single potion which is injected into the wielder’s bloodstream when the secondary trigger is activated (also a swift action).

Construction

Requirements Craft Technological Arms and Armor, military lab; Craft DC 27; Cost 4,000 gp

New Racial Hybrid Item

The following item is made by catfolk spellcasters and technologists working in conjunction.
Divine Reservoir
Aura faint transmutation; CL 6th
Slot none; Price 2,250 gp; Weight 1 lb.

Description

These magical batteries are created by catfolk tech riggers and blessed by priests of Sekhmet. Their design is based on recovered schematics and salvaged components found in the wreckage of great starships once piloted by Sekhmet’s followers (see “In Your Campaign” for more details on these ships and where they came from) and are frequently used by their temple guardians to enhance the power of a lioness lance. A divine reservoir functions as a normal battery, except that it can be recharged by any worshiper of Sekhmet by expending one daily use of channel positive energy per charge restored, up to a maximum of 10 charges. Charges restored to the battery in this manner impart an extra 2d6 points of bonus damage (as the divine power from flame strike) to attacks with any technological weapon powered by the divine reservoir.

Construction

Requirements Channel Smite, Craft Technological Item, align weapon, production lab, caster creator must worship Sekhmet; Craft DC 27; Cost 1,125 gp

Pathfinder: Catfolk Artwork

We’re getting ready to release Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Catfolksoon. Today, I thought I would share the artwork from it. We decided early on with catfolk that we are not going to tell you which style of catfolk to play, whether human-like catfolk or a cat-like catfolk. We decided to you decide. As such, we made sure to reflect it in the artwork. We hope you enjoy these images.

Pathfinder: A Cat’s Bite is Worse Than Its … Meow.

Coming up next from Jon Brazer Enterprises is the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Catfolk. This release has a number of options for cat lovers everywhere. But what I want to show off first are the two new Alternate Racial Traits. These two are perfect of any feline player character. Check them out.

Feline Bite: Some catfolk are adept at delivering powerful bites in combat. Catfolk with this racial trait have a bite attack they can use as a natural weapon. This bite is a primary attack that deals 1d6 points of damage. This replaces natural hunter.

Nine Lives (Su): A few catfolk exhibit a preternatural knack for avoiding or surviving perils that would kill any other being. Up to eight times over the course of their lifetime, such catfolk can use one instance of this ability to save his life as follows: If an attack or effect would otherwise kill him due to hit point loss, he is instead knocked unconscious and automatically stabilizes at –1 hp. If an attack or effect would otherwise kill him due to energy drain, he is instead knocked unconscious, but retains a number of negative levels equal to his hit dice minus one. If an attack or effect would kill him due to Constitution damage or drain, he is instead knocked unconscious and his Con is reduced to 1. This replaces cat’s luck.

Pathfinder: Exclusive Look at the Maps of the Sands

Deadly Delves: Quests of the Sands (PFRPG)The last exclusive look that I wanted to get out last week, I did not have time to post. So I took a few moments over the weekend to prepare some of the maps from Deadly Delves: Quests of the Sands. These two beautiful maps are from the short adventures Wreck of the Golden Barque and the Bandit King’s Hideout. Each of these short adventures, or quests, are enough for one night’s adventure with little preparation needed for the GM. All of these are Egyptian themed but work well for an Arabian themed campaign. Click on the image to see larger versions of these maps.

Pathfinder: An Exclusive Look At Tengu Spells

The one exclusive look I want to post is the maps from Deadly Delves: Quests of the Sands, but I have been busy and away from my computer. In the meantime, however, I can show you something about Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Tengus that I have been wanting to show off for a while. Let’s take a look at the spells within.

These spells are incredibly thematic and perfect to really make your tengu characters come alive. I also want to point out just how much we integrated the Advanced Class Guide. The new spellcasting classes in that book are getting some real love. Here are two of the spells within.

Murder of Crows
School conjuration (summoning); Level arcanist/ sorcerer/wizard 2, bard/skald 2, druid/hunter 2, shaman 2, summoner 2, witch 2
Casting Time 1 round
Components V, S, M (a handful of shiny coins)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect one swarm of crows
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
You summon a swarm of crows. Use the stats for a bat swarm (B1) without the blindsense ability. The swarm attacks the nearest creature. If the caster is a tengu, he can control the swarm by concentrating during the spell’s duration. Otherwise, the caster has no control over its target or direction of travel.

Steal Eyes
School necromancy; Level antipaladin 4, arcanist/sorcerer/wizard 4, cleric/oracle/warpriest 5, witch 4
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw Fortitude negates; Spell Resistance yes
You rip the eyes of your target from their body, calling them into your hands. The target permanently gains the blinded condition, and the pain of losing their eyes causes them to be sickened. The sickened condition and associated penalties are pain effects and can be removed by any magical healing or a full day’s rest. Since the target’s eyes are physically removed, the resulting blindness cannot be cured by remove blindness, but can be cured by heal, regeneration, or similar abilities.

Stolen eyes can be used in a spell such as scrying to strengthen the bond between the caster and the target or can be used as an additional material component for a spell you cast in the next round that targets the same creature. This consumes the stolen eyes and increases the save DC of the saving throw for the creature by 1.

Pathfinder: Another Exclusive Look Inside Advanced Tengu

Carrakwak, our signature tengu inquisitor graces the cover of Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Tengus, but he is not the only tengu the book. Today we are showing off the other avian characters within this book done by Brian Brinlee. Brian’s work has been featured in works by Purple Duck Games, Silver Gryphon Games, and Rite Publishing. Check out these images for inspiration for your own tengu characters and look for his work in the upcoming Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Catfolk, coming in February.
